New Website Extols Virtues of Voting for Taller U.S. Presidential Candidate
Tall Guys for Kerry relates height to issues important to U.S. citizens and informs public why the taller candidate usually wins presidential elections
Portland, OR - August 31, 2004 - Believing a taller president is a more effective president, a group called Tall Guys for Kerry (TGFK) has published the web site www.tallguysforkerry.com comparing the stature of Democratic Senator John F. Kerry (6' 4") with current President George W. Bush (5' 11").
With a humorous and provocative new website, Drew Faust (6' 5") and Jason Thompson (6' 6") hope to increase voter registration, political participation and swing undecided voters who are endlessly bombarded with rhetoric from both sides. "We know that being above-average height in today's world presents unusual sets of problems," says Jason Thompson, co-founder of TGFK. "Everyday tasks, such as finding proper fitting clothing and cars, are becoming increasingly difficult; therefore, we support a candidate who understands our problems."
Adds Drew Faust, the other co-founder, "These hardships translate into greater empathy for the plight of tall American families, who find it increasingly frustrating to support themselves, or afford proper healthcare. We believe a taller president would be much more sympathetic to our unique issues.”
According to the Presidential Height Index, a general comparison of presidential election winners after the wide acceptance of television, the taller candidate usually wins. Two exceptions are the 1976 election between Carter and Ford, and the 1972 Nixon-McGovern election. Some believe that hair was a more powerful factor in these elections, as the two losing candidates were bald.
The 2000 Bush-Gore election is considered an exception to these exceptions, as the taller Gore received the popular vote, but the final controversial outcome rested with the Supreme Court, who voted 5-4 in Bush's favor.
The new site illustrates light-hearted, yet strangely insightful parallels between the issues the taller population face and those of the upcoming election. For instance, the TGFK group correlates Kerry's closer proximity to changing weather conditions to his sensitivity to climate and environmental concerns. "Hopefully people on both sides of the political spectrum will find the site informative, but we want voters to come to their own conclusions whether or not taller is better," Thompson says. "I'm a die-hard independent voter, but the importance of this election has compelled me to make a choice, and I'm choosing John Kerry, the taller one with thicker hair.”
